What Is Cellulite?

Cellulite is a common, harmless skin condition that causes lumpy, dimpled flesh on the thighs, hips, buttocks, abdomen, and breasts. It is more prevalent in women than men; 80% - 90% of women get cellulite sometime after they reach puberty.

Cellulite forms when the skin above certain areas of fat is pulled downward to the deeper tissues by connective tissue bands. This creates an uneven surface.

Causes of Cellulite Formation

Hormonal Changes

Pregnancy

One of the reasons for cellulite development during pregnancy could be an increase in the level of estrogen, which is responsible for the arrangement of fatty tissues in the body.

Hormones

Hormones are thought to play an important role in the formation of cellulite. Aside from estrogen, other hormones including insulin, adrenaline, noradrenaline, thyroid hormone and prolactin are all thought to contribute to the development of cellulite. It is a possibility that as women approach menopause, the decrease in estrogen results in lower collagen production. This then cause the skin to lose its elasticity, thereby making it sag and increasing the formation of cellulites.

Poor Diet & Unhealthy Lifestyle

Cellulite is not caused by “toxins,” although a healthy lifestyle with a good balance of exercise and diet may help reduce the risk. People who eat too much fat, carbohydrates, and salt and too little fiber are likely to have greater amounts of cellulite.
